What is ozone and why does it heal?
Three oxygen atoms, generated in the office from medical oxygen, with four measurable effects in your body: it oxygenates, reduces inflammation, kills microbes and activates your own antioxidants.

What ozone is
Ozone (O₃) is a triatomic form of oxygen: three atoms instead of two. It forms naturally in the upper atmosphere — the ozone layer — and was discovered in 1840. Because of its powerful germicidal action it was first used to disinfect water and operating rooms.
For medical use it is not taken from the air: it is produced on the spot in a generator fed with pure medical oxygen that applies high voltage (corona effect). The concentration is set precisely between 2 and 87 micrograms per milliliter depending on the condition and route. At those doses ozone is a medicine, not a toxic gas.
What ozone therapy is and what it does in the body
Ozone therapy is the medical application of an oxygen-ozone mixture to improve the body's natural processes. Its effect isn't to "kill" something but to activate: ozone reacts within seconds with blood or tissue and triggers a cascade of biological responses that last for days.
Four documented effects
- Oxygenating: increases the blood's ability to absorb and carry oxygen and stimulates glycolysis, the energy source of every cell.
- Antioxidant: the only known means of stimulating all the body's own antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase), more efficient than any vitamin.
- Germicidal: inactivates bacteria, fungi and viruses, including antibiotic-resistant strains.
- Anti-inflammatory and analgesic: neutralizes inflammatory radicals and modulates the immune system, reducing chronic pain without drugs.
- Regenerative: stimulates the repair of cells and tissue (cartilage, tendon, skin, intervertebral disc).
- Immunomodulating: balances the immune response in autoimmune diseases and chronic infections.
Routes of application at Ozonocell
The route is chosen by condition. All are outpatient, with local anesthesia when needed.
- Major autohemotherapy (blood route): blood is drawn, ozonated and reinfused. Systemic effect for chronic pain, fibromyalgia, diabetes, immune disorders.
- Intradiscal (discolysis): ozone inside the herniated disc under X-ray guidance. Herniated disc and sciatica.
- Intra-articular: injection into knee, shoulder, hip or hands. Osteoarthritis, arthritis, sports injuries.
- Paravertebral and muscular: injection into muscles and facet joints. Lower back and neck pain, spasms.
- Rectal: gentle insufflation with systemic effect; alternative to the blood route for children, older adults or difficult venous access.
- Skin (bagging) and topical: ozone in a sealed bag over wounds and ulcers; ozonated oils on skin.
- Ear and IV therapy: ear insufflation for otitis and vertigo; combination with IV vitamins.
Is it safe? Contraindications and protocols
At medical doses and applied by a certified physician, ozone has one of the highest safety profiles in pain medicine: it isn't addictive, doesn't interact with medication and its side effects are minimal and transient (local warmth, slight dizziness). It is never inhaled: the respiratory route is the only contraindicated one.
It is contraindicated in uncontrolled hyperthyroidism, favism (G6PD deficiency), pregnancy, active bleeding and ozone allergy. All of this is ruled out at the evaluation. Ozonocell follows the protocols of the Mexican Ozone Therapy Association (AMOZON), of which Dr. Márquez is an active member.
Frequently asked
Common questions about ozone
Isn't ozone toxic?
Inhaled at high concentrations, yes. In medicine it is never inhaled: it is applied to blood, tissue or cavities at microgram doses, where it acts as a medicine. Dose and route make the difference.
How long until it works?
The oxygenating and analgesic effects are felt in the first session; anti-inflammatory, immune and regenerative effects consolidate over a cycle of sessions.
Is it compatible with my medication?
Yes. It has no known interactions with painkillers, anti-inflammatories, diabetes drugs, antiretrovirals or biologics.
Is ozone therapy recognized?
It is practiced in over 40 countries with medical societies, clinical guidelines (Madrid Declaration on Ozone Therapy) and a growing scientific literature. In Mexico it is regulated as medical practice and endorsed by AMOZON.
How often can it be applied?
In cycles of 1 to 2 sessions per week plus maintenance boosters; Dr. Márquez sets the frequency by condition.
