When the knee hurts on stairs, getting up, or at night

Osteoarthritis is the progressive wear of the cartilage that cushions the joint. It affects 10–15% of people over 60, but also athletes, people with excess weight and anyone who had a meniscus or ligament injury. The result is a knee that hurts, swells and loses mobility.

At Ozonocell we treat arthrosis, meniscus damage, bursitis, osteochondritis, tenosynovitis, gout, psoriatic and reactive arthritis with ozone and hyaluronic acid.

    Typical symptoms

    • Pain climbing or descending stairs
    • Stiffness when getting up or after sitting
    • Swelling and warmth
    • Cracking or popping with movement
    • Trouble squatting or kneeling
    • Night pain that wakes you up

Anti-inflammatories help for a few hours and over time damage the stomach and kidneys. Cortisone shots work but weaken cartilage when repeated. Ozone plus hyaluronic acid works on the cause, not just the symptom.

Ozone + hyaluronic acid: reduce inflammation, lubricate, regenerate

Intra-articular ozone lowers the inflammation and free radicals that destroy cartilage, and boosts tissue oxygenation. Hyaluronic acid restores the viscosity of the synovial fluid (viscosupplementation) so the joint glides without friction again. It is a sound alternative for patients who haven't responded to medication or other conservative treatments, with an excellent safety profile.

Knee X-rays showing different grades of osteoarthritis
The grade of wear on the X-ray defines the number of sessions. Even advanced grades achieve pain reduction and postpone replacement.

    How the treatment works

    1. Evaluation: knee exam and review of X-rays or MRI to grade the wear.
    2. Injection cycle: intra-articular ozone in weekly sessions; hyaluronic acid on the scheduled sessions. 20 minutes each.
    3. Immediate activity: you walk out; avoid impact for the first 24 h.
    4. Maintenance: periodic boosters keep or improve pain reduction with no added risk.

    Who is a candidate?

Patients with osteoarthritis of any grade, meniscus damage, bursitis or persistent pain after an injury. A knee with an existing prosthesis or active infection needs a different evaluation. Dr. Márquez tells you at the first visit.

    Frequently asked

    What patients ask before booking

How many sessions do I need?

Usually a cycle of 5 to 10 weekly sessions depending on the grade of wear. The exact number is set at the evaluation.

    Does the injection hurt?

It is done under local anesthesia; most describe momentary pressure. You can walk right away.

Can I combine it with physical therapy?

Yes, and we recommend it: strengthening the quadriceps protects the result.

Does it work if I was told I need a replacement?

In many cases, yes: it reduces pain and lets you postpone surgery. We evaluate it with your X-rays.
